5.1 Surround Sound Computer Speakers - Logitech Z-5500

!±8± 5.1 Surround Sound Computer Speakers - Logitech Z-5500

The z-5500s are Logitech's flagship 5.1 surround sound computer speakers. The z-5500s offer more than 500 watts of total power and are one of the few speakers on the market that actually qualify for THX certification. The 188 watt subwoofer provides deep heart pounding bass which is usually only seen in home theater systems, not 5.1 surround sound computer speakers.

The multitude of inputs (optical, coax digital and four stereo) mean that you can connect these speakers to your DVD player, game console or a computer easily. In fact, it's possible to have up to 6 sources connected to these 5.1 surround sound computer speakers at the same time, which is astonishing when you consider these are only computer speakers. The wide variety of inputs also allows you to use these speakers in a home theater setup. Despite the fact that these are only 5.1 surround sound computer speakers, they still sound great for home theater applications. Are they better than a high end home theater system? Probably not, but they're still better than many home theater in a box setups I've heard. The z-5500s also come with a remote that allows you to adjust the volume, levels, inputs and effects. If you're going to use these in a home theater system I'd recommend getting a universal remote. I purchased a logitech universal remote and programmed it to control the TV, DVD player, cable box and the logitech z-5500 and it worked like a charm.

The Logitech z-5500 is capable of decoding Dolby Digital and DTS signals as well as supporting Dolby Pro Logic II. There aren't many 5.1 surround sound computer speakers on the market capable of handling such a wide variety of formats. If you're going to connect the z-5500s to your computer a good sound card will give you the best sound quality. However, even without a highend sound card these 5.1 surround sound computer speakers sound great.

The satellite speakers for the system are not small. Each of the satellite speakers is around 7.5" tall, so if you plan to put these on your desk, make sure you have the room for them. The subwoofer is a real beast and probably weighs in at about 20-30 lbs (maybe more) and is about 20"L x 18"W x 18" T. Along with the remote you also get a 7" x 4" control pod that you can set on your desk, but if you don't have a lot of desk space these may not be the 5.1 surround sound computer speakers for you.

The sound produced by the z-5500s are simply amazing. The hi mid and low tones are crystal clear. The sub produces teeth chattering, thunderous bass, so if there's an explosion onscreen you hear it AND feel it. The sub in fact is more powerful than many home theater subs. If you're a real audiophile you may find some faults with the z-5500s, but considering the price and the sound quality its difficult to find anything wrong with these speakers. If you're looking for the best 5.1 surround sound computer speakers on the market then the logitech z-5500 is the ideal choice.

No Sound From Speakers?

!±8± No Sound From Speakers?

You have a sound card and a set of speakers, but for the life of you, you cannot get them to work. Most of the time, this is caused by carelessness. Though it sounds idiotic, the first step is to check the connections. Most people accidentally plug the speaker jack into the Line-in Jack of the sound card. Check to see if this is not so in your case. If you have amplified speakers, make sure that the power is on and mute is not.

The next step is to see where the trouble lies. Many-a-times, people spend hours trying to fix a system that hasn't broken. Check to see if the speakers work properly before trying to troubleshoot your system. Do this by connecting the speakers to a music system or radio. If they do, the problem is definitely system related.

The first thing to do now is to check the volume levels in the system. Check the volume controller in the system tray and also open the advanced audio controls to make sure that all is well-nothing is muted or at really love levels Now use several multimedia applications to play various media files to insure that the problem is truly system related, and not limited to a particular application or file. If you find that only a certain application has the problem, such as Windows Media Player or Winamp, reinstall it.

If all this is to no avail, go to the system properties [Windows] + [Pause/Break] or right-click on my computer and select Properties and in device manager make sure that sound card is installed properly. Look for a yellow exclamation mark, if it present, you will have to reinstall the drivers.

If you have an integrated sound card that is disabled in the BIOS, then Windows will not be able to detect it. Refer to your motherboard manual, and find out how to enable the same. Usually it is present under the advanced peripherals section in BIOS.

If you have access to another PC, plug the sound card into that system, and check if it is working. If the problem persists, off to a technician you go.
